That they were intelligent and knew that they needed tools. They could use bigger rocks.

The anthropologists learned how homo Habilis used the tools they fashioned by using stone tools for cutting, scraping, chopping and sawing plants, animals, and wood. The Homo Habilis was the first hominid to have mastered the stone tool technology and they are also known as "Handy Man". Hope this helps! ;)
